Inflation in Brazil

Brazil experienced one of the most severe hyperinflations in modern history. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, annual inflation ran into the thousands of percent — prices in supermarkets were relabelled daily, and the country cycled through six currencies in eight years as each one collapsed.

The Plano Real of 1994 finally broke the cycle by introducing the real alongside an unusual transitional accounting unit that let prices stabilise before the new currency was issued. It worked: inflation fell from over 2,000% to single digits within two years, and Brazil has had a functioning inflation-targeting regime since 1999.

The Banco Central do Brasil targets 3% inflation with a tolerance band of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
