Inflation analysis
Inflation in United Kingdom
This is the deepest series available anywhere on this site, running back to 1751. It spans the Industrial Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, both World Wars and the post-war era, which makes British data unusually useful for very long-run comparisons.
Britain's most severe modern inflation came in the 1970s, when the annual rate reached roughly 24% in 1975 — the worst of any major industrial economy in that decade. Inflation was brought under control in the 1980s and 1990s, and the Bank of England was granted operational independence over interest rates in 1997. The 2022 energy shock pushed inflation to 11.1% in October 2022, a 41-year high.
The Bank of England has a 2% CPI inflation target, set by the government and in place since 1992.

- What is the current inflation rate in United Kingdom?
- United Kingdom inflation was 3.20% in 2026, the most recent year in this dataset, measured as the change in the annual average consumer price index from 2025. The Bank of England has a 2% CPI inflation target, set by the government and in place since 1992.
- How much has British Pound lost in value since 1751?
- £100.00 in 1751 has the same purchasing power as £25,836 in 2026. That is cumulative inflation of 25,735.81% over 275 years, an average of 2.04% per year.
- What years does this United Kingdom inflation calculator cover?
- This calculator covers 276 years, from 1751 to 2026. You can convert an amount between any two years in that range.
- Can British Pound inflation be negative?
- Yes. Negative inflation, or deflation, means prices fell and British Pound gained purchasing power over that year. United Kingdom recorded deflation in 81 of the 275 years measured here, most recently in 1933. The steepest fall was -23.18% in 1802.
- What is the difference between CPI and the inflation rate?
- The consumer price index (CPI) is a level: it measures the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services in a given year. The inflation rate is the percentage change in that level between two periods. This calculator uses the ratio of CPI values for your two chosen years to convert an amount between them.
