Inflation in New Zealand

New Zealand holds a genuine claim to monetary history: the Reserve Bank Act of 1989 made it the first country in the world to adopt a formal, legislated inflation target. Almost every inflation-targeting framework in use today descends from that experiment.

The reform came after a difficult period — New Zealand inflation ran in double digits through much of the 1970s and 1980s, peaking above 17%. The contrast before and after 1990 in this series is one of the clearest illustrations anywhere of what inflation targeting changed.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand targets 1–3% inflation, with a focus on the 2% midpoint.
