Inflation analysis
Inflation in Poland
Poland's price history divides sharply at 1989. The final years of the communist economy produced near-hyperinflation, with prices rising roughly 250% in 1989 and around 585% in 1990 as controls were lifted under the Balcerowicz shock-therapy reforms.
Stabilisation was rapid by regional standards. Four zeros were removed from the złoty in 1995, and Poland has run a conventional inflation-targeting regime since 1998. The 2022 energy shock pushed inflation above 18%, its highest since the 1990s.
Narodowy Bank Polski targets 2.5% inflation with a tolerance band of plus or minus one percentage point.
